The water cycle vocabulary

| Freshwater | Water that does not have salt in it and which most animals and all humans need to drink to survive. |

| What is groundwater? | An underground supply of water which has not soaked into the soil, but instead collects above solid rock. |
| Condensation | Process that changes water vapor (gas) into liquid water. Clouds gather water vapor and release them as rain drops (liquid). |
| Evaporation | Process that changes liquid water into water vapor. When you boil water, it changes from liquid to gas. |
| Precipitation | Rain, snow and hail. When clouds get to heavy with liquid rain, they release it. |
| Water Cycle | The journey that water takes from the clouds (liquid) to the rivers, lakes, and oceans, into the air (gas) and back to the clouds. |
| Atmosphere | Air around the earth, including oxygen. |
| Cirrus Clouds | Highest clouds in the sky and do not produce precipitation. Not puffy, very thin. No rain in these clouds reaches us. |
| Cumulus Clouds | Puffy clouds and can produce rain/hail that can lead to strong storms. |
| Stratus Clouds | Lowest clouds in the sky and looks like a sheet or layer of clouds. Produce rain and snow. |
| Weather | What is happening in the atmosphere at a certain place and time. |
| Climate | Average weather conditions over a long period of time. |
| How are weather and climate different? | Climate is the weather in an area that happens for a season. Weather is what happens everyday, changing constantly. |
