Chondrichthyes (jawed fishes) cartilaginous fishes. have powerful jaws and well-developed sense organs
Elasmobranchii subclass of Chondrichthyes. includes sharks, skates, and rays. have gills that occur in rows of 5-7 and lack moveable gill covers. possess paired pelvic and pectoral fins. can detect smells and electrical fields
placoid scales cover the body of Elasmobranchii. teeth are derived from these scales
Sarcopterygii (jawed fishes) lobe-finned fishes (coelacanth and lungfish). have bony endoskeletons and paired fins which are structured similar to limbs of tetrapods.
operculum moveable bony plate which covers the gills of Sarcopterygii and Actinopterygii
Actinopterygii (jawed fishes) similar to lobe-finned fishes in design except the fleshy lobes are represented by bony rays.
chondrosteans ancient group of Actinopterygii which include sturgeon and paddlefish
neopterygians group of actinopterygii which includes telosts (modern bony fishes), bowfins, and gars.
Amphibia (tetrapod) frogs, salamanders, caecilians. first chordates to adapt to life on land. skin is thin and highly vascularized which is ineffective against water loss. also require water for reproduction. have three chambered heart
Reptilia (tetrapod) turtles, snakes, lizards, crocodilians. first truly terrestrial vertebrates. have dry, scaly skin to prevent water loss and amniotic eggs and internal fertilization.
Chelonia turtles. diapsid reptile though appear to anapsid. have three chambered heart
Squamata lizards and snakes. have three chambered heart
Crocodylia have four chambered hearts
Mammalia (tetrapods) evolved from synapsid tetrapods. have hair and mammary glands. have four chambered heart.
