Malthus A scientist who believed that the human population would eventually run out of resources
Lyell A scientist who believed that earth was shaped over time
Hutton A scientist who believed that earth is shaped by geological forces
Evolution The gradual change in a population's gene pool
Natural selection Darwin's theory that animals best fitted to the environment will survive and pass this trait onto their offspring while the other animals will die.
Artificial selection Humans breed the animals with the "desired traits"
What three factors are necessary for evolution to occur? over-production, genetic variation, limited resources
Where does the mutation need to occur in order to be passed on? the gametes
Adaptation A trait that increases an animal's survival
Acquired characteristic The idea that an animal develops traits over it's lifetime (giraffe:necks)

Vestigial structures Structures that are no longer needed (appendix,pinky,wisdom tooth)
