commensalism relationship where one species benefits and the other is neither harmed nor helped
mutualism relationship where both species benefit
competition when two species use the same resource
herbivores animals that eat plants or other primary producers. can break down a plant's molecules into usable compounds
carnivores animals that eat herbivores
omnivores both herbivores and carnivores. use simple sugars and starches stored in plants as food, but cannot digest cellulose
decomposers organisms that cause decay. release nutrients back into the environment
detrivores organisms that obtain their energy from the organic wastes and dead bodies that are produced at all trophic levels
producers organisms that first capture energy
consumers organisms that consume plants or other organisms to obtain the energy necessary to build their molecules
food chain path of energy through trophic levels
