Matter substances that make up the universe. all matter has mass and volume
mass a measure of the amount of matter in an object. mass is measured in grams or kilograms
volume the amount of space occupied by a sample of matter. volume is measured in liters(L) and milliters(mL) as well as in cubic centimeters(cm3)and cubic meters(m3)
weight a measure of the force of gravity. like all forces, weight is measured in newtons(n)
physical property it can be observed without changing the type of matter.
chemical property How one kind of matter behaves when it is brought into contact with another kind of matter.
solid a phase or state of matter in which a substance has definite shape and volume.
gas a state or phase of matter in which a substance has no definite shape or volume. oxygen is and example of a gas.
liquid a state or phase of matter in which a substance has a definite volume but no shape. Liquids take the shape of the part of container they occupy
