QuestionAnswer
what is the process when carbon dioxide enters and oxygen exits a leaf? Diffusion
what type of leaf contains many chloroplasts? A palisade cell
why are there air sacs between mesophyll cells? because it allows gas to diffuse easily and reach all the cells
how is a leaf adapted for photosynthesis? being broad so has large surface area to absorb light and being thin because gases wont have to travel far
what is the purpose of stomata? it allows gas exchange: c.doxoide to diffuse into it and oxygen to diffuse out of it.
how is chloroplasts adapted for maximum efficency of photosynthensis? they are arranged down the sides of the palisade cells allowing some light to reach the mesophyll cells.
how is the mesophyll cells adapted for maximum efficency of photosynthesis ? because they are small and irregualr, increase the surface area to volume ratio so large amounts of gases can enter and exist.
what is osmosis? it is the diiffusion of water across a partially membrane from area of high concentration water to an area of low concentration of water
what happens to a potato placed in salt water? it becomes flaccid(Soft&floppy) because there a high concentration of water molecules inside the potato cells than outside.
what happens when water leaves a plant cell by osmosis? the cell contents will shrink and there is less water pressure against the cell wall
what happens when water enters a plant cell by osmosis? the cells will swell up and there is more water pressure against the cell wall - turgor pressure causes the plant cell to become hard and rigid.
how does a stomata work? 1- water enters from other cells 2- chloroplasts make sugar 3-guard cells become hard and rigid(turgid) 4- stomata then opens.
what happens when the blood cell of an animal is placed in salt water or in pure water? it loses or gains water by osmosis, since animal cell has no cell wall for support it will shrink and burst(lysis)
how is a root hair adapted for transpirtion? they are long and thin and have large surface area to absord lots of water from the soil by osmosis!
what is the evaporation of water from leaves called? transpiration
why is transpiration useful? because the evaporation will cool the plant, brings water to the leaves for photosynthesis, the cell full of water will give it support and the water moving up the stem carries useful dissolved minerals.
how can you prevent to much water evaporating from the leave? has a waxy covering called the cuticle and stomata mainly on its shaded underside.
what is xylem and phloem cells? they are specalised cells that form the transport system in a plant
what do xylem cells carry? they carry water and minerals from the roots to the leaves for photosynthesis
what do phloem cells carry? they carry dissolved food such as sugar from the leaves to other parts of the plants - movement called translocation.
what can the dissolved sugars be used for? it can be used for growth or stored as starch
how are xylem cells adapted to do their job? they have thick strong cell walls that contan a chemical called lignin
why are xylem vessels strong enough to support a tree? because the vessels are made of dead xylem cells joined to form a long hollow tube, hole in middle called lumen.
name 3 things that can increase the rate of transpiration? 1- increase in temperture 2- increase in light intensity 3- increase in air movement(wind)
what happenes when light intensity increases? the stomata wil open allowing more water to escape
what happenes when temperture increase? the random movement of water increases and more water will escape
what happens when wind increases the water molecules near stomata are removed which increases evaporation and diffusion of water from inside of leaf
