Text Features

Authors of Nonfiction help the reader understand through different text features

QuestionAnswer
Where is the Table of Contents located? In the front of the book
What does the Table of Contents tell the reader? The names of the chapters
How is the index of a book arranged? Alphabetically
What information is found in the Introduction of a book A general overview of what the book is about
What are boldfaced words? Text written darker to let the reader know they are important
Where would you find a glossary and what is its purpose? In the back of the book. It tells the definition of some words found in the book.
What information do sidebars have? Sidebars have additional information to support the text.
Where would an author write his final thoughts about the text to the reader? In an afterword
What are words in the text which are written on a slight angle called? italics
What is the difference between photographs and illustrations? Photographs are taken with a camera and illustrations are drawn.
