What is Schizophrenia ? Overview: * Most disabling disorder * 1 % of the population of the word. One in a 100 worldwide. * It is a thought disorder- Not split personality disorder.
How many phases are they in schizoprenia and what are they ? There are four phases : * Schizoid Personality * Prodromal Phase * Schizophrenia * Residual Phase
What are the characteristics of Schizoid Personality Phase of Schizophrenia ? * Indifferent to relationships * Have no friends * Flat affect * Isolate themselves * Difficult to read * lean towards jobs where they can work by themselves ( nightshifts)
What are the characterisitcs of Prodromal Phase ( before acute ) of schizophrenia ? * Social withdrawal * Neglect hygiene * Odd behavior * Blunted/ inappropriate affect * Initiative decreased (lose thier drive, lose sight of goals.) * Odd perceptions (hearing voices) * Length is variable- can not put time on it.
What are the characteristics of Schizophrenia Phase (the acute phase ) of Schizophrenia ? * It is a active phase. Psychosis( breaking with reality) -- Below two or more of the following for at least one month -less if treated) *Delusions(fixed,false beliefs) *Hallusinations (false sensory perception) *Disorganized speech(does not make se *Disorganized behavior(can not take care of themselves, decline in ADL's) *Have flat affect(not showing emotions or feelings) * Alogia(poverty of speech) dont have a lot to say *Experience social or work disfunction *Not in touch with reality (Psychos

What types of Schizophrenia are they ? There are 5 types of schizophrenia * Paranoid * Disorganized * Catatonic type * Undifferentiated * Residual
What are the characteristics of Paranoid type Schizophrenia ? a. Preoccupation with one or more delusions or frequent auditory hallucinations. Presence of delusions of persecution or grandeur and auditory hallucinations related to a single theme. The individual is often tense, suspicious, hostile , agressive b. None of the following is prominent: Disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, or flat or inappropriate affect - they do not have those characteristics / behaviors.
What are the characteristics of Disorganized type of schizophrenia ? a. All of the following are prominent (present): 1. disorganized speech 2. disorganized behavior 3. flat or inappropriate affect B. the criteria are not met for Catatonic Type. (worst and most disablating type of schizophrenia )
What are the characteristics of the Catatonic Type of schizophrenia ? Clinical picture is dominated by at least two : 1. Motoric immobility- catalepsy (including waxy flexibility) or stupor 2. Excessive motor activity( that is apparently purposeless and not influenced by external stimuli) 3.Echolalia or echopraxia 4.Extreme negativism(an apparently motiveless resistance to all instructions or maintenance of rigid posture against attempts to be moved) or mutism. 5.Peculiarites of voluntary movements as evidanced by posturing (voluntary assumption of bizzare postu
What is Echolalia? Repeating the same word over and over ( ex. lunch lunch lunch )
What is echopraxia ? Repeating a movement over and over .
What are the characteristics of Undifferentiated Type of Schizophrenia ? A type of Schizophrenia in which symptoms that meet Criterion A are present , but the criteria are not met for Paranoid, Disorganized, or Catatonic Type. The behavior is clearly psychotic: that is there is evidence of delusions, hallucinations,incoherence, and bizzare behavior. However, the symptoms do not can not be easily classified into any of the other types.
What are the characteristics of Residual Type of Schizophrenia ? A. absence of prominent delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and grossly disorganized behavior or catatonic behavior. B. presence of negative symptoms or two or more symptoms listed in Criterion A, present in an attenuated (much less) form. Residual Schizophrenia occurs in an individual who has a chronic form of the disease and is the stage that follows an acute episode.
What is Schizoaffective Disorder ( S.A.D.) ? Has symptoms of schizophrenia and mood disorder ( usually depression/mania )
What are the characteristics of Residual phase of schizophrenia ? * Symptoms go in to remission(better) or exacerbation(worse) * Signs and symptoms are similar to the Prodromal phase.
