Muench atmosphere
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| air | the mixture of gases surrounding the planet; on Earth, mostly (99%) nitrogen and oxygen |
| troposphere | layer of atmosphere closest to the ground extending to 5-7 miles (10 km); contains about 75% of the mass of the atmosphere; where climate and weather are |
| stratosphere | second layer of atmosphere extending to 30 miles (about 50 km) above sea level; includes ozone, which blocks harmful UV rays |
| mesosphere | third layer of atmosphere extending from stratosphere to about 53 miles (85 km); least studied because it's above where weather balloons can go and below where satellites can go |
| thermosphere | fourth layer of atmosphere extending up to 600 miles (1,000 km) above the ground; often considered part of outer space |
| exosphere | end zone of atmosphere, where gas particles can freely escape Earth to space |
| weather | the state of the atmosphere for a given place of time in terms of temperature, moisture, wind, clouds |
| climate | weather conditions common to an area over the long term |
