Enviro Change MA

Measuring Enviromental Change, Biology 3

QuestionAnswer
What can enviromental change be measured with? Non-living Indicators.
Name three non-living indicators. Temperature, Nitrate Level and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) level.
Name Three living indicators. Any from list; Lichen, Mayfly Nymphs, Phytoplankton,Alderfly, Stonefly larvae and the Barn Owl.
Explain how Mayfly Nymphs can be used to measure enviromental change. Animals like mayfly nymphs are good living indicators for water pollution, because they are very sensitive to the level of oxygen in the water. If you find mayfly nymphs in a river, it indicates the water is clean.
Name a factor which increases Carbon dioxide (CO2) levels. Human activities such as Burning Fossil fuels is a factor which increases CO2 levels.
Explain how Lichen can be used to measure enviromental change. Air pollution is monitored by looking at different types of Lichen, which are very sensitive to Sulfer Dioxide levels in the atmosphere. The number and type of Lichen in a particular location will indicate how clean the air is. (lots of lichen, means clea
Explain how Phytoplankton can be used to measure enviromental change. Phytoplankton - when levels of nitrates and phosphates in water increase - this is called algal bloom. Adding fertisilers or sewage can increase algal blooms which can indicate water pollution.
