what are seismic waves? a wave from an earthquake
what is a fault? the surface along on which the rocks move when they pass their elastic limit and break
what is an earthquake? vibrations that are produced when the rocks break along a fault
what is a normal fault? a break in rock caused by tension forces
what is a reverse fault? break in rock caused by compressive forces and the rock moves upward
what is a strike- slip fault? break in rock caused by shear forces where the rocks move past each other
what is a focus? is below the earths surface where energy is released from the seismic waves
what are primary waves? they are seismic waves that move the rock particle back and forth
what are secondary waves? seismic waves that move rocks at the right angles
what are surface waves? seismic wave that move rocks up and down
what is an epicenter? the epicenter is located above the earths surface on earths focus
what is a seismograph? instrument used to record the waves all the waves
what is magnitude? measure of the energy release from the earthquake
what is liqufacation? occurs when wet soil acts like liquids
what is a mercalli scale? used to measure the intensity of the seismic waves
what is a richter scale? used to measure the magnitude of earthquakes
