Vocab. Matter

Practice your matter vocabulary!

QuestionAnswer
Physical Properties The characteristics of a subtance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance.
Density The concentration of matter in an object.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Weight A measure of the pull of gravity on an object.
Volume The amount of space that an object takes up.
Mixture A combination of two or more different kinds of matter each of which keeps it's own physical properties.
Solution A type of mixture in which particles of the two substances are evenly mixed. They can't be separated.
Compound A substance made of the atoms of two or more different elements.
Solubility The ability of one substance to be dissolved in another substance.
Solid The state of matter that has a definite shape and volume.
Liquid The state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape.
Gas The state of matter that doen not have a definite shape or volume.
Evaporation The process by which a liquid changes into a gas.
Condensation The process by which a gas changes back into a liquid.
Reactivity The ability of a substance to go through a chemical change.
Combustibility The chemical property of being able to burn.
Element A substance made up of only one kind of atom.
Atom The smallest unit of an element that has all the properties of that element.
