Earthquake L4

Science

QuestionAnswer
A sudden movement of the Earth's crust is called? earthquake
The place where the slipping begins during an earthquake is called ? focus
The surface point directly above the focus during an earthquake is called? epicenter
At what point on the ground do people first feel the ground shaking? epicenter
Rocks on both sides of a ______ are pushed and pulled by forces in the crust causing an earthquake. fault (a crack in the Earth's crust)
What do the waves of an earthquake remind you of when looking at a pond? ripples (throw a small rock into the pond you will see ripples spreading out, this is how the waves of an earthquake move)
What is an instrument that detects and measures waves produced by an earthquake called? seismometer
Name the 3 different kinds of waves? *Primary waves (P) - the fastest and move through liquid and solids move back and forth *Secondary waves (S) - half as fast as P move through only solids; up and down *Surface waves (Lg)- slowest and move like ripples, but are the most dangerous
How many seismometers are needed to pinpoint the exact location of an earthquake? data from at least 3 stations - the point where the three circles intersect is the epicenter of the earthquake
The measure of the amount of energy released by an earthquake is called what? magnitude
What measures the magnitude of an earthquake at the epicenter? Richter scale
What measures what people felt and what happened to object at a specific location? Mercalli scale
On a Richter scale each number that goes up indicates how many times more energy was released? 30 times more energy
How many more times of energy was released when one earthquake measured 3.0 and the another measured 5.0? 5 - 3 = 2 so 2 X30= 60 times more energy
I am sometimes felt after the main earthquake...what am I called? aftershocks
On the Mercallli scale how is the earthquake rated? by Roman numeral I to XII
What usually occurs after an underwater earthquake? tsunamis (means wave in port)
Why is a tsunamis easier to predict than an earthquake? it follows an earthquake that can be felt using seismometers
Name some of the safest places to be during an earthquake and during a tsunamis: earthquake - under a sturdy table or a kitchen counter tsunami - go to high ground away from the shoreline
