| Fontanels | "Soft spots" that allow for the enlargement of the skull as the brain growth occurs |
| Sinuses | Spaces in the skull |
| Sutures | Area where cranial bones have joined together |
| Foramina | Openings in the bones that allow nerves and blood vessels to enter or leave the bone |
| Appendicular Skeleton | Composed of the shoulders and the girdle, arm bones, pelvic girdle, and leg bones |
| Red Marrow | Found in certain bones such as the vertebrae, ribs, sternum, and cranium |
| Joints | Two or more bones joined together |
| Axial Skeleton | Main trunk of the body |
| Periosteum | Necessary for bone growth, repair, and nutrition |
| Medullary Canal | Cavity in the diaphysis |
| Diaphysis | Long shaft on two extremities of the bones |
| Ligaments | Hold long bones together at joints |
| Yellow Marrow | Composed of fat cells |
| Endosteum | Membrane that lines the medullary canal and keeps the yellow marrow intact |
| Visceral Muscle | Smooth muscle, found in the internal organs of the body such as the digestive and respiratory system, blood vessels and eyes |
| Excitability | irritablity, the ability to respond to a stiumulus such as a nerve impuluse |
| Flexion | Decreasing the angle between two bones or bending a body part |
| Insertion | The ends that move the muscles when the muscles contract |
| Fascia | Tough, sheet like membrane that covers and protects the tissue |
| Origin | Ends that do not move |
| Tendon | Strong, tough connective-tissue cords |
| Cardiac Muscle | Forms the wall of the heart and contracts to circulate blood |
| Skeletal Muscle | Attached to bones and causes body movement |
| Extension | Increasing the angle between two bones or straightening a body part |
| Contract | Become short and thick |
| Elasticity | Allows the muscle to return to its original shape after it has contracted or stretched |
| Circumduction | Moving in a circle at a joint or moving one end of a body part in a circle while the other end remains |
