biogenesis The theory that living organisms come only from other living organisms
spontaneous generation An early and now disproved hypothesis that living organisms develop from nonliving material.
coacervate A cell-like droplet formed from dissimilar substances
half-life The period of time in which half of a radioactive substance decays
isotope One of multiple forms of a chemical element that has a different number of neutrons than other atoms of that element.
mass number The sum of the protons and neutrons in an atom.
microsphere A type of microscopic droplet enclosed by a membrane composed of organic compounds.
radioactive dating A method of determining the age of an object by measuring the amount of a specific radioactive isotope it contains.
radioactive decay The release of particles or radiant energy by the unstable nuclei of some isotopes.
radioactive isotope An isotope with an unstable nucleus.
archaebacteria A prokaryotic organism distinguished from other prokaryotes by composition of the cell membranes and walls.
chemosynthesis The production of carbohydrates through the use of energy from inorganic molecules instead of light.
cyanobacteria Photosynthetic unicellular prokaryotes.
endosymbiosis A mutually beneficial relationship between one organism and another that lives within it; the hypothesis of endosymbiosis relating to the evolution of eukaryotes that holds that chloroplasts and mitochondria evolved from endosymbiotic bacteria.
ozone A molecule composed of three atoms of oxygen; ozone in the upper atmosphere shields the Earth from ultraviolet radiation.
ribozyme A type of RNA that is able to act as an enzyme.
