Vocab WordDefinition
alleles different forms of the same gene
heredity passing of traits from parent to offspring
offspring the children of parents, sometimes also called progeny
genes segments of DNA that code for specific characteristics traits
genotype an organism's genetic code for its physical apperance
phenotype an organism's physical apperance for a specific gene
chromosome coiled structure of DNA where genetic information is stored
homozygous having two identical alleles for a single trait, sometimes also called purebred
heterozygous having two different alleles for a single trait, sometimes also called hybrid
dominant a trait that will appear in the offspring even if only one of the parents contributes to it. shown by using a capital letter.
recessive a trait that will appear in the offspring only if both of the parents contribute to it. shown by using a lower case letter.
