what is science? organized way of using evidence to learn about the natural world. ANNND the body of knowledge scientists have built up after years or using this process
what are 2 areas of science other than biology? physics and medicine
what kind of questions can science answer? questions about nature and how things move
what kind of question can science NOT answer? questions about football and purses
what does it mean to describe a scientist as skeptical? that he's not gullible and has to have proof to believe something
what is the main difference between quantitative and qualitative data? quantitative- data expressed through numbers and counting while qualitative is data that's descriptive and can't be counted
why was the scientific method made? it was made so we gather data and make proper conclusions in the rightest way possible
list the steps involved in the scientific process 1.ask a question 2.form a hypothesis 3.set up a controlled experiment 4.Recording and analyzing results 5.drawing a conclusion
describe Redi's experiment. what conclusion did he made? Redi's experiment was made because Redi noticed that on a piece of meat after flies had came, maggots had appeared. he thought that the flies had laid eggs
how did Needham test Redi's findings? What was his motivation for testing? he decided to heat a jar of gravy in an attempt to kill all the microorganisms in it. then he covered it and left it for a few days. he then found microorganisms in the gravy. his motivation was to prove spontaneous regeneration
what were Needham's mistakes? he wasn't sure that all the microorganisms were heating when we heated the jar to kill them all
in Spallanzani's experiment, what was the independent variable?what improvements did he made over Needham's experiment? the closed one, he actually heated the jar enough and closed it IMMEDIETLY
what are the 8 characteristics that all living organisms have in common? 1.made up of unit called cells 2.based on a universal genetic code 3.reproduce 4.grow and develop 5.respond to their environment 6.taken as a group, living things change over time 7.maintain a stable internal environment 8.obtain&use materials and energy
list the five levels of organization that we will study in biology cells, organisms, molecule, communities of organisms in an area, biosphere
what system of measurement do scientists use? metric system
