Erosion The carrying away of sediment
Deposition The laying down of sediment
Physical Weathering The breakdown of rock by mechanical means
Water What would cause rocks to become rounded
Chemical Weathering The breakdown of rock by chemical means, normally acid
Lichens They grow on rocks, giving off a weak acid, they cause chemical weathering
Clearing When the mountain is deforested to prepare for mountaintop removal
Gravity The force that is constantly pulling material down, it is behind all mass movement
Seasons Caused by the tilt of the Earth
Winter the season Maryland would experience if the Northern Hemisphere was tilted away from the sun
Latitude The distance north or south of the equator an area is, determines the amount of direct sun an area gets
Global Warming the gradual increase in the Earth’s temperature that can cause glaciers and ice caps to melt
Greenhouse Gases The gasses in the atmosphere that trap heat
El Niño A change in worldwide weather patterns caused by the trade winds slowing down bringing more warm water to the eastern Pacific Ocean.
Nonrenewable Resource A resource that is used faster than nature can recreate it
Renewable Resource A resource that is created faster than we can use it
Fossil Fuels Natural resources found in the Earth’s crust that are formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals
Recycling To remake a product into something new
Reclamation The process of making the land useful again after surface mining has taken place
Watershed The area of land that drains to the same body of water
Estuary where freshwater from rivers and streams mixes with salt water from the ocean
Chesapeake Bay The largest estuary in the United States
Ice Wedging A type of physical weathering when water freezes and expands cracks
Forests One of the best types of land use to prevent erosion
Wetlands this land type is great at soaking up nutrients and pollutants
