chapter 5 notes

What is wieght? a measure of teh gravitional force exerted on an object; it's value can change with the location of the object of the universe
What is Mass? A measure of the amout of matter in an object
What is friction? A force that opposies motion between 2 surfaces that are in contact
What surfaces help friction The rougher the surfaces the greater the friction
What is Kinetic friction? Kinetic=moving, between 2 moving forces
What is Static friction When a force is applied to an objectbut doesn't 'cause the object to move, static= not moving
What are some ways to apply friction? Make surfaces rougher.Sand put on icy streets.increase force
What is Gravity? A force of attraction between objects that is due to thier masses
What is Motion? An object's change in position relative to a reference point
What is Speed? The distance traveled divided by teh time interval during which the motion occured
What is Velocity? The speed of an object in a certain direction
What is Acceleration? The rate at which velocity changes, an object accelerates if it's speed, direction,or both change
What is a newton? the SI unit for force
What si the symbol for newton? N
What is net force? The combonation of all of teh forces acting on an object
