| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| what is 3-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine? | It is an illegal drug that is a stimulant and psychotropic. |
| what is the absolute refractory period? | The period of time following an action potential when a nerve fibre cannot be restimulated. |
| what is accumlise? | getting used to. |
| what is accomodation? | The process by which a response is lost as all the nerurotransmitters is discharged from the vesicles of a synpase as a result of repeated stimulation. The response returns once more neurotransmitter is synthesised. This is also named FATIGUE. |
| what is acetyl coenzyme A? | A two carbon compound derived from glucose and which joins with 4 carbon compound to form citric acid at the start of the Krebs cycle in aerobic respiration. |
| what is acetylcholine? | ACh = a common neurotransmitter. |
| what is an acid? | A substance that forms H plus ions and acts as a proton donor. |
| What is Acquired Immunedeficiency syndrome? | AIDS. A disease caused by the Human immunodeficiency VIRUS. |
| what is an acrosome? | A membrane bound storage sac of enzymes in the head of the sperm. |
| what is an acrosome reaction? | The releasing of enzymes from the acrosome when the head of the sperm touches the surface of the ovum. |
| what is actin? | A contricle proteins which makes up the structure of the muscle cells. |
| what is action potential? | The depolorisation of the membrane of a nerve fibre due to an influx of sodium ions from about -7mv to around + 40mV. This is propagated along the fibre as a nerve impulse. |
| what is activation energy? | The energy needed to make or break bonds at the beginning of a chemical reaction. |
| What is the active site? | The area of enzyme with specific shape which fits the shape of the substrate molecules. |
| what is active transport? | This is a form of cellular transport in which energy is used to move substances against a concentration gradient. |
