what is 3-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine? It is an illegal drug that is a stimulant and psychotropic.
what is the absolute refractory period? The period of time following an action potential when a nerve fibre cannot be restimulated.
what is accumlise? getting used to.
what is accomodation? The process by which a response is lost as all the nerurotransmitters is discharged from the vesicles of a synpase as a result of repeated stimulation. The response returns once more neurotransmitter is synthesised. This is also named FATIGUE.
what is acetyl coenzyme A? A two carbon compound derived from glucose and which joins with 4 carbon compound to form citric acid at the start of the Krebs cycle in aerobic respiration.
what is acetylcholine? ACh = a common neurotransmitter.
what is an acid? A substance that forms H plus ions and acts as a proton donor.
What is Acquired Immunedeficiency syndrome? AIDS. A disease caused by the Human immunodeficiency VIRUS.
what is an acrosome? A membrane bound storage sac of enzymes in the head of the sperm.
what is an acrosome reaction? The releasing of enzymes from the acrosome when the head of the sperm touches the surface of the ovum.
what is actin? A contricle proteins which makes up the structure of the muscle cells.
what is action potential? The depolorisation of the membrane of a nerve fibre due to an influx of sodium ions from about -7mv to around + 40mV. This is propagated along the fibre as a nerve impulse.
what is activation energy? The energy needed to make or break bonds at the beginning of a chemical reaction.
What is the active site? The area of enzyme with specific shape which fits the shape of the substrate molecules.
what is active transport? This is a form of cellular transport in which energy is used to move substances against a concentration gradient.
