Astronomy The study of the moon, stars, and other objects in space
Axis An imaginary line that passes through Earths center and north and south poles about which Earth rotates
Rotation Spinning of Earth on its axis
Revolution The movement of one object around another
Orbit The path of an object as it revolves around another in space
Solstice When the sun is farthest north or south of the equator
Equinox when the noon sun is directly overhead at the equator
Force push or pull
Gravity a force that pulls all objects toward each other
Law of Universal Gravitation every object in the universe attracts every other object
Mass amount of matter in an object
Weight force of gravity on an object
Inertia the tendancy of an object to resist a change in motion
Newton's 1st law of motion an object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion with a constant speed and direction unless acted on by a force
Phase The different shapes of the moon we see from earth
Eclipse when in object in space comes between the sun and a third object, it casts a shadow on an object
Solar Eclipse when the moon passes directly between earth and sun blocking sunlight from earth
Lunar Eclipse the blocking of sunlight to the moon that occurs when Earth is directly between the sun and the moon
Umbra the darkest part of a shadow
Penumbra the part of the shadow surrounding the dakest part
Telescope a device built to observe distant objects by making them appear closer
Maria dark, flat areas on the moons surface formed from huge ancient lava flows
Crater a large pit formed by impact of meteoroids
Meteoroids a chunk of rock or dust in space
