Basic Biomechanics

QuestionAnswer
Describe how the sagittal plane divides the body extending from front to back vertically... it divides the body into right and left parts
Describe how the frontal plane divides the body extending from side to side vertically... it divides the body into an anterior and posterior portion
Describe how the transverse plane divides the body the transverse plane is horizontal and divides the body into upper and lower portions at about waist height
List the three axes that movement takes place around Vertical/Longitudinal axis, Sagittal axis, Frontal axis
Which planes intersect to create the sagittal axis? The sagittal and transverse planes intersect creating a line from front to back
Which planes intersect to create the vertical/longitudinal axis? The sagittal and frontal planes intersect creating a line from the top of our head, right down to our feet.
The frontal and transverse planes intersect to create which axis? The frontal axis... which extends horizontally from one side of the body to the other side.
A spheroidal or Ball and Socket Joint allow which type of movement? Flexion/extension/hyperextension, abduction/adduction, rotation and circumduction
Which joint type allows simply flexion and extension? e.g. elbow joint Hinge or Ginglymus
The Ellipsoidal or Condyloid is found in the radiocarpal joint, where is that? Wrist
The saddle joint allows for all movements except....? Rotation
Plane or Gliding joints are found...? in the feet or hands and intertarsal or intercarpal joints
Pivot or Trochoid joint allows for which movement? Pronation and suppination of the forearm.
............ is moving away from the midline of the body. Abduction
Flexion and extension are performed primarily in the......... plane. sagittal plane
What are some common movements found in the transverse plane? medial and lateral rotation, transverse abduction and adduction
What is the axis of rotation for the frontal plane? Sagittal axis (runs front to back)
What is the axis of rotation for the sagittal plane? Frontal axis (runs side to side)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
