describes ALL terms for the weather ch.123 test

QuestionAnswer
meteorologist scientist who studies weather
air pressure weight of column of air
relative humidity amount of water vapor in mixture with the air
temperature average amount of evergy in molecules of a substance
precipitation any form of water that falls from clouds
anemometer instrument measuring wind speed
barometer measures pressure
psychrometer measure relative humidity
wind vane tells direction of wind
water vapor water in gas form
forecast prediction of weather for next few days
isotherm lines on a weather map that connect equal amounts of temperature in areas
isobar lines on a weather map that connects areas of equal pressure
millibar units of pressure used on barometers
evaporation process by which water escapes into air as gas
condensation water vapor turns into liquid water
when do clouds form when air is cold to dew point and particles are present
what causes winds and determines the direction they blow in unequal heeatinnng of the earths surface, and winds blow from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure
continental polar cold/dry forms over land near the poles
continental tropical hot/dry formed over continents in hot areas.
maritime tropical warm/humid forms over oceans in the tropics
maritime polar cold/humid formed over ocean near poles.
what is the relationship between air pressure and altitude? air temp and altitude? as altitude increases, pressure decreases, which when that happens, temperature drops.
what happens when a cold front moves through an area? storms arrive and temperature changes drastically!
what happens when a warm front moves through an area? clouds form cirrus to stratus, changes temperature to warm and fair.
what happens when a high pressure moves through an area? when a high pressure system moves through an area, fair sunny weather comes
what happens when humidity reaches 100%? it rains bro..
how are weather and climate different? weather-current conditions climate-weather known to be for a long time. for example our desert weather is known to be dry and hot.
at what temperature does water freeze? celsius-0 fahrenheit-32
how do we name winds? where they come from.
what do we call a wind that moves from N to S. northerly wind
what is the most abundant gas in the atmosphere? the 2nd most... nitrogen--2nd--oxygen
what layer of the atmosphere does weather occur in troposphere
in order from the earth to space--the layers of the atmosphere 1.troposphere 2.stratosphere 3.mesosphere 4.thermosphere
each new layer of the atmosphere is indicated by a change in ________ temperature
what does the ozone do? protects us from the UV rays.
what is the very outermost layer of the atmosphere in which satelliters are found? exosphere!
what is the formula for calculating density? Mass ______ volume
what are thunderstorm clouds called? cumulonimbus! :D UP :))))
describe a tornado and hurricane--how are they different? tornado-cold and warm air masses meet on land and last for a couple hours. hurricane-- on ocean, huge, seen from outer space, and lasts long
what is the difference between cyclones and anticyclones? cyclones-spin counterclockwise -weather they bring and pressure it associates with. anticyclones- spin clockwise
essay-- relate vegetation to climate. climate determines vegetation, meaning the vegetation depends on the climate. for example, where we live, the climate is hot and dry. cactus and plants that can survive in our climate will grow here.
cold front looks like-- blue triangles facing one direction.
warm front looks like-- red scallops facing one direction.
occluded front looks like-- triangles and scallops that are purple, facing one direction.
stationary front looks like-- red scallops and blue triangles facing opposite directions, alternating.
H blue
L red
why has weather forecasting improved? because of technology like computers and satellites!
when a warm and a cold air mass meet, and dont move? stationary front
what air mass would form over mexico? tropical continental
when air moves up a mountain^^^^ what happens to the temperature and humidity? temperature drops & relative humidity increases.
highfeathery clouds are--and what do they indicate cirrus and indicated a warm front
anticyclone weather? dry and fair
what is el Niño? warm waters from western pacific ocean fo fown to south america --fish die because of water temperature change and occures around chrismas. hence the name meaning--baby jesus.
local winds are like-- land breezes and sea breezes
what heats faster? water of land? land
cools off faster? land
why? water generally likes to stay the same temperature. Stubborn little one.
risen hot air creates-- area of low pressure.
