Genetics The study of how traits are passed on from one generation to the next.
Chromosomes The structures found in the nucleus that carry genetic information.
homozygous Having two of the same alleles for a trait.
heterozygous Having two different alleles for a trait.
recessive Allele that is not expressed when a dominant one is present.
genotype The alleles that make the characteristics of an organism.
phenotype The physical appearance of an organism.
monohybrid cross The cross looking at one trait.
Gregor Mendel The father of genetics, studied pea plants.
Somatic cells Human body cells, all have 23 pairs of chromosomes.
Trisomy 21 AKA Down Syndrome, caused by an extra chromosome in the 21st pair in humans.
XY Genetic symbol for male sex chromosome, the 23rd pair.
XX Genetic symbol for female sex chromosome, the 23rd pair
karyotype A picture that shows the pairs of genes for an individual.
Incomplete dominance Type of heredity when dominant alleles do not mask the recessive alleles.
Autosome Chromosome that codes for all body traits except sex determination.
Sex chromosomes The 23rd pair of chromosomes that is responsible for sex determination.
Sex-linked trait Trait carried on the X chromosome, most often occurs in males (XY)
Dihybrid cross Examining the outcome of two characteristics in a cross.
