Skeletal Muscle Func
Muscle Function with regards to tension and force
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is net torque? | The vector sum of the muscle torque and the resistive torque. |
| Which fiber type motor units always produce tension first? | slow-twitch motor units |
| What is a concentric contraction? | A contraction where by the muscle shortens |
| What is an isometric contraction? | A contraction of the muscle fibers involving no change in muscle length. |
| What is an eccentric contraction? | A contraction of muscle fibers involving lengthening of a muscle. |
| Define "agonist" muscle | A "mover"; a muscle contracting and casuing movement of a body segment at a joint |
| Define "antagonist" muscle | An "opposer"; a muscle acting to slow or stop a movement of the agonist muscle |
| What is a stabilizer? | A muscle not involved in direct movement but acting to stabilize a body part against a force |
| What is a neutralizer? | A muscle that acts to pull against and cancel out an unwanted line of pull from the agonist or prime mover |
| Define active insufficiency. | A limitation of two-joint muscles to produce a force when the joint position places the muscles on slack. |
| Define passive insufficiency | A limitation of two-joint muscles to extend or hyperextend to allow full range of motion at all the joints crossed. |
| What is stretch-shortening cycle? | A pattern of eccentric contraction followed immediately by concentric contraction |
| Define "electromechanical delay". | The delay between the arrival of a neural stimulation and the development of muscle tension; reaction time of a skeletal muscle |
