Histology, definitions

TermMeaning

matrix or extracellular material filled with fibers and ground substance
ectoderm gives rise to the epidermis and nervous system
endoderm gives rise to the lining of the digestive and respiratory tracts and to the digestive glands
mesoderm gives rise to muscle, bone, blood, and other tissues
angles of observation longitudinal, cross, transvers, and oblique
epithelial tissue covers the body surface, lines body cavities, and covers many organs
basement membrane made up of collagen and glycoproteins
simple squamous epithelium(SSE) is once cell layer thick and is well-adapted to transporting substances across it, single centrally located nucleus
goblet cells mucus secreting, wing glass shaped
alveoli lining of the lungs (SSE)
endothelium the walls of the capillaries are made with the SSE but called this
Simple cuboidal epithelium made up of a single layer of cube shaped cells with a centrally located mucleus common in glands, lines the kidney tubules, and lung bronchioles
Simple columnar epithelium single layer of vertically elongated thin cells, nuclei are present in the basal 1/3 of the cell, often has secretory function, absorbs nutrients in teh small in testine, and found in lining of the uterine tubes, and uterus, stomach, and large intestine
pseudostratified epithelium not every cell reaches the basement membrane, abundant in the respiratory tract where it is ciliated and produces mucus, also found in male reproductive tract
Stratified squamous epithelium surface cells of this are flattened, and pushed to the surface, ex skin
stratified cuboidal epithelium lines the follicles in the ovary and seminiferous tubules in the testes, sweat ducts are also lined with this type of tissue
stratified columnar epithelium rare tissue, found in short transitional zones where one type of epithelium grades into aother, ex pharynx, larynx, and canal, and male urethra
transitional epithelium is found in the uniary system where it is capable of disention, thought to rep. a transitional stages btwn. stratified squamous, and stratified columnar epithelium
