Chpt. 5 Lesson 2

Plate Tectonics

QuestionAnswer
I am a scientist who examines rocks to find out about earth history and structure...who am I? geologist
What occupation is a geologist? scientist
What do geologists study? earth history and structure
How do geologist study earth history and its structure? by examining rocks
What is Wegener's idea called? theory of continental drift
What does the theory of continental drift say? Millions of years ago the Earth's continents were joined together like a jigsaw puzzle, but they pulled apart to where they are today.
What types of evidence have scientists found that support the theory of continental drift? (2) 1. rocks on the eastern mountains in South America are the same type and age as the rocks on the western side of Africa 2.plant and animal fossils
Explain the evidence about the plant and animal fossils that support the theory of continental drift: A freshwater reptile, the mesosaurus, has been found in rocks in South America and Africa. It could not have swum in the ocean's salt water; could have traveled across the land in freshwater. Would have meant that S. America and Africa were connected.
The conclusion many scientists have reached is that South America and Africa were once a supercontinent called what? Pangaea
When South America and Africa floated apart what water filled the space between them? Atlantic Ocean
I am the squeezing or pushing together of the continents' crust...what am I? compression
When a continental plate is being compressed, what happens? The ground is forced upwards and folded mountains are produced.
When one plates rubs past another plate, what is this movement cause? shear
Explain the movement called shear? a force that twists, tears, or pushes one part of the crust against another
Shear can cause Earth's crust to break along what? fault
What happens during a shear along a fault? one side of the fault moves up and the other side moves down producing fault block mountains
Name a group of mountains in the western United States that are fault block mountains: Sierra Nevada
Name some folded mountains in India and Asia? Himalayas
What makes magma rise? when the plates are moving apart this causes the magma to be pushed from the mantle toward the surface
I am a theory that explains how forces deep within Earth can cause ocean floors to spread and continents to move...what am I called? plate tectonics
I am hot melted rock below Earth's surface...what am I? magma
I am a deep crack in Earth's crust...what am I called? fault
