vitamins substances needed in small quantities that help regulate body functions
minerals elements needed in small quantities for sturdy bones, teeth, healthy blood, & regulation of daily elimination
water most common nutrient, makes up 60% of your body, drink 8-10 glasses a day
60% of what you should eat, 4 kcal/gm, found in bread, pasta, fruit, cereal carbohydrates
20% of what you should eat, made up of amino acids, 4 kcal/gm, found in meat, fish, milk protein
20% of what you should eat, 2 types: saturated and unsaturated, 9 kcal/gm, fats
saturated fat solid at room temperature
unsaturated fat liquid at room temperature
2 types: water soluble & fat soluble vitamins
water soluble vitamins B & C
fat soluble vitamins A,D,E & K
iron, calcium, potassium, zinc, fluoride are minerals
mouth mechanical digestion, chew up food, break down CHO
esophagus long tube connects mouth to stomach
stomach mechanical digestion, most occurs here, breaks down food to liquid using digestive juices
small intestine most chemical digestion & absorption of nutrients take place here
large intestine absorbs water & remaining material is formed into feces
glucose our cell's use this for energy
amino acids link together to form proteins
liver makes bile
gallbladder stores bile
anorexia nervosa eating disorder where food is restricted
bulimia eating disorder where people binge & purge
