What is a molecule? A group of atoms that is held together by covalent bonds
What is organic molecule? bonding between 2 or more carbon atoms
What are macromolecules? groups of molecules that are joined together
4 types of macromolecules: carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids, and proteins
What are carbohydrates? are organic macromolecules that are made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms.
What are monosaccharides? Simple carbohydrates
What are examples of monosaccharides? Sugars such as glucose, fructose, and ribose
What are polysaccharides? more complex carbohydrates
What are examples of polysaccharides? Glycogen, starch, and cellulose
Where is cellulose found? found in the cell walls of plants
What are nucleic acids formed from? nucleotide monomers
What are nucleotides? are chemical compounds that are primarily comprised of the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus. They consist of a five-carbon sugar, a nitrogenous base, and one or more phosphate groups
What are the two main types of nucleic acids? ribonucleic acids (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA).
What does RNA contain? ribose
What does DNA contain? deoxyribose
What does DNA store? stores genetic information and encodes the sequences of all the cell's proteins
What is RNA involved in? the direct production of the proteins.
What are hormones? are protein-containing substances that play a role in the regulation of cellular functions.
What are antibodies? Substances containing proteins that play a role in defense
What are enzymes? proteins
