| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are all living organisms on earth made of? | microscopic structures called cells |
| Cells consist of smaller pieces called what? | organelles |
| What are organelles like? | “organs” of a cell |
| organelles | they are groups of complex molecules that help cells survive |
| What are examples of organelles? | Cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, vacuole, mitochondrion, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus and chloroplast |
| What is cytoplasm? | is a suspension fluid that houses the other organelles |
| What does a cell membrane or plasma mebrane act like? | acts as a boundary layer around the cytoplasm thus separating cells from their outside environments |
| What is a cell wall? | is a secretion of the cell membrane; it provides protection from physical injury, and with the vacuole, it provides structural support |
| What does a vacuole do? | stores water andIt also removes waste from cells and produces turgor pressure against the cell wall for cellular support ingested food in a fluid sack |
| What does lysosomes contain? | contain enzymes specialized to break down ingested materials, secretions, and wastes. |
| What is a nucleus? | is like the “brain” of the cell. It contains chromosomal information on chromatin |
| What is chomatin composed of? | is composed of long, thin strands of DNA which contains “instructions” that control cell metabolism and heredity |
| What are ribosomes? | are RNA and protein complexes that are found in all cells. These complexes help cells during protein translation by joining amino acids together to form polypeptides. |
| What does mitochondria act like? | act like a stomach for the cell; they take in nutrients, break them down and create energy for the cell |
| What are chloroplasts? | are the food producers in a plant cell |
| What does endoplasmic reticulum transport? | transports chemicals between and within cells. It is important to note that all cells do not always have all the organelles. |
| What do tissues make up? | Tissues make up the second level of organization. Examples of specific kinds of tissue are muscle tissue, nervous tissue, and epithelial tissue |
| What is an organ? | is a group of tissues that work together to perform a specific function |
| What are organ systems composed of? | Organ systems are composed of organs with interrelated functions. For example, the urinary system is an organ system made up of organs that produce, store, and carry urine. |
| How are cells able to communicate with each other? | Cells are able to communicate with each other mainly through nerve impulses and hormones |
| What is homeostasis? | is the regulation of metabolic processes to maintain the stable internal conditions required for survival. |
