ALLERGY A secondary immune response to a normally harmless substance, an allergen such as pollen or certain foods.
ANGINA PECTORIS Condition characterized by thoracic pain resulting from clotted coronary arteries; precedes a heart attack.
ATHEROSCLEROSIS Hardening of the arteries.
BULK FLOW Molecules of fluids or gases move in bulk from high pressure to low pressure.
CLOSED CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Blood is confined to the heart and blood vessels.
COMPLEMENT A set of plasma proteins that enhance nonspecific and specific defenses.
DIGESTION The process by which food is physically and chemically broken down into molecules that can be absorbed by cells.
EMPHYSEMA A chronic respiratory disease where there is over-inflation of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, causing a decrease in lung function, and often, breathlessness.
ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS An alpha-amino acid that is required for protein synthesis but cannot be synthesized by humans and must be obtained in the diet.
ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS fatty acid required by the body in manufacturing prostaglandins.
EXCRETION The act or process of discharging waste matter from the blood, tissues, or organs.
HEMOCOEL Large open space where tissue and organs are directly bathed in blood.
HOMEOSTASIS Maintenance of normal internal conditions in a cell or an organism by means of self-regulating mechanisms.
HYPERTENSION Arterial disease in which chronic high blood pressure is the primary symptom. Abnormally elevated blood pressure.
INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE Tissue response to injury that is characterized by redness, swelling, pain, and heat.
NEPHRON Microscopic kidney unit that regulates blood composition by glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and tubular secretion.
NUTRITION the process by which organisms take in and utilize food material.
OPEN CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Arrangement of internal transport in which blood bathes the organs directly, and there is no distinction between blood and interstitial fluid.
PERISTALSIS Wavelike contractions that propel substances along a tubular structure such as the esophagus.
RENAL FAILURE Inability of the kidneys to excrete wastes and to help maintain the electrolyte balance.
