| ANGINA PECTORIS | Condition characterized by thoracic pain resulting from clotted coronary arteries; precedes a heart attack. |
| ATHEROSCLEROSIS | Hardening of the arteries. |
| BULK FLOW | Molecules of fluids or gases move in bulk from high pressure to low pressure. |
| CLOSED CIRCULATORY SYSTEM | Blood is confined to the heart and blood vessels. |
| COMPLEMENT | A set of plasma proteins that enhance nonspecific and specific defenses. |
| DIGESTION | The process by which food is physically and chemically broken down into molecules that can be absorbed by cells. |
| EMPHYSEMA | A chronic respiratory disease where there is over-inflation of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, causing a decrease in lung function, and often, breathlessness. |
| ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS | An alpha-amino acid that is required for protein synthesis but cannot be synthesized by humans and must be obtained in the diet. |
| ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS | fatty acid required by the body in manufacturing prostaglandins. |
| EXCRETION | The act or process of discharging waste matter from the blood, tissues, or organs. |
| HEMOCOEL | Large open space where tissue and organs are directly bathed in blood. |
| HOMEOSTASIS | Maintenance of normal internal conditions in a cell or an organism by means of self-regulating mechanisms. |
| HYPERTENSION | Arterial disease in which chronic high blood pressure is the primary symptom. Abnormally elevated blood pressure. |
| INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE | Tissue response to injury that is characterized by redness, swelling, pain, and heat. |
| NEPHRON | Microscopic kidney unit that regulates blood composition by glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and tubular secretion. |
| NUTRITION | the process by which organisms take in and utilize food material. |
| OPEN CIRCULATORY SYSTEM | Arrangement of internal transport in which blood bathes the organs directly, and there is no distinction between blood and interstitial fluid. |
| PERISTALSIS | Wavelike contractions that propel substances along a tubular structure such as the esophagus. |
| RENAL FAILURE | Inability of the kidneys to excrete wastes and to help maintain the electrolyte balance. |
