classification adrenergic agonist
action stimulates alpha receptors causing vasovonstriction which results in increased BP
indications neurogenic shock, spinal shock, cases of shock in which HR does not need to be increased, drug induced hypotension
adverse effects HTN, VT, headache, excitablity, tremor
contraindications acute MI, angina, cardiac arrhythmias, severe HTN, CAD, cardiomyopathy
dosage adult: 100-180 mcg/min. once BP stabilized, dose can be lowered to 40-60mcg/min peds:5-20mcg/kg followed by .1-.5mcg/kg/min
