Enzymes+Cells

QuestionAnswer
Enzymes are substances that cause chemical reactions to occur faster.
Enzymes work by decreasing the amount of energy needed to activate the chemical reaction
enzymes are a type of catalyst
Ribosomes produce specific enzymes to act on specific substances substrates
The folds make pockets, which are called active sites
All living organisms on Earth are made up of microscopic structures called cells
Cells consist of smaller pieces, called organelles
Cytoplasm is a suspension fluid that houses the other organelles
cell membrane (or plasma membrane) acts as a boundary layer around the cytoplasm thus separating cells from their outside environments
cell wall is a secretion of the cell membrane; it provides protection from physical injury, and with the vacuole, it provides structural support.
vacuole stores water and ingested food in a fluid sack
nucleus is like the “brain” of the cell
Ribosomes are RNA and protein complexes that are found in all cells. These complexes help cells during protein translation by joining amino acids together to form polypeptides.
Mitochondria act like a stomach for the cell; they take in nutrients, break them down and create energy for the cell
Chloroplasts are the food producers in a plant cell
endoplasmic reticulum transports chemicals between and within cells. It is important to note that all cells do not always have all the organelles.
Organ systems are the fourth, and highest, level of organization. Organ systems are composed of organs with interrelated functions.
organ is a group of tissues that work together to perform a specific function
Nerve impulses send signals from the central nervous system to the cells of the rest of the body
Hormones are released by endocrine glands and are carried by the bloodstream to target cells
Membrane pumps are protein molecules embedded in the cell membrane that transport molecules across the cell membrane against the concentration gradient
Endocytosis is the process in which cells bring large molecules inside by surrounding them with the cell membrane and forming vesicles.
Exocytosis is the process in which cells package materials into vesicles using the Golgi apparatus, and expel the vesicles from the cell.
Diffusion involves the movement of material across the cell membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Facilitated diffusion is a type of diffusion that uses special transport proteins to transfer larger molecules across cell membranes
Osmosis is a type of diffusion that specifically involves the movement of water
Filtration involves the movement of water and solute molecules across the cell membrane due to hydrostatic pressure

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
