QuestionAnswer
What are cells? All living organisms on Earth are made up of microscopic structures called cells
What are organelles? Cells consist of smaller pieces, called organelles
What is cytoplasm? Cytoplasm is a suspension fluid that houses the other organelles
Cell Membrance. The cell membrane (or plasma membrane) acts as a boundary layer around the cytoplasm thus separating cells from their outside environments.
What is the cell wall? The cell wall is a secretion of the cell membrane; it provides protection from physical injury, and with the vacuole, it provides structural support.
What is a vacuole? A vacuole stores water and ingested food in a fluid sack. It also removes waste from cells and produces turgor pressure against the cell wall for cellular support.
What are lysosomes? lysosomes contain enzymes specialized to break down ingested materials, secretions, and wastes
What is the mucleus? The nucleus is like the “brain” of the cell. It contains chromosomal information on chromatin
What is the chromatin? The chromatin is composed of long, thin strands of DNA which contains “instructions” that control cell metabolism and heredity.
What are ribosomes? Ribosomes are RNA and protein complexes that are found in all cells. These complexes help cells during protein translation by joining amino acids together to form polypeptides.
What is the mitochondria? Mitochondria act like a stomach for the cell; they take in nutrients, break them down and create energy for the cell.
WHat is the chloroplasts? Chloroplasts are the food producers in a plant cell
What is the endoplasmic reticulum? The endoplasmic reticulum transports chemicals between and within cells. It is important to note that all cells do not always have all the organelles.
What is an organ? An organ is a group of tissues that work together to perform a specific function
What are organ systems? Organ systems are the fourth, and highest, level of organization. Organ systems are composed of organs with interrelated functions. For example, the urinary system is an organ system made up of organs that produce, store, and carry urine
What are the various levels of organization that can be summed up by a diagram? cells tissues organs organ systems
What are multicellular organisms made up of? Multicellular organisms are made up of differentiated cells
What is a tissue? Interconnected cells can perform specialized functions as a group. This group of interconnected cells is known as tissue.
What do organelles do to help the cell survive>? Organelles are like the “organs” of a cell; they are groups of complex molecules that help cells survive
What are examples of organelles? Cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, vacuole, mitochondrion, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus and chloroplast are examples of organelles
What does the golgi body do for proteins in the cell? In addition to playing an important role in waste disposal, the Golgi apparatus also processes, sorts, and modifies proteins in cells.
Do cells always have all the organelles? It is important to note that all cells do not always have all the organelles.
What do many organic and inorganic substances dissolved in cells allow? Many organic and inorganic substances dissolved in cells allow chemical reactions that are necessary to maintain life to take place.
What is the difference between plant and animal cells? Some animal cells also have vacuoles, but the vacuoles in animal cells are much smaller than those found in plant cells.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
