QuestionAnswer
Why do bioloigst ask questions? To help them understand living systems.
What is a hypothesis? a possible explanation for a set of observations or a possible answer to a scientific question.
What are variables? All factors that can change in an experiment
What is a controlled experiment? An experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time
Why do scientist design experiments? To test their hypothesis.
What is a balance? a tool used to measure the mass of objects
What is a graduated cylinder? a beaker marked in intervals that is used to measure volume
What is a microscope? a tool used to produce magnified images of small objects
What is a spring scale? a tool used to measure weight and force
What is a thermometer? a tool used to measure temperature
What is a test tube? a cylindrical tube, usually smaller than a beaker, that is open at one end and closed at the other
After gatherin and interpreting data, what do scientist do? scientists draw conclusions about their hypotheses
Why do scientist communicate? Communicating results helps scientists learn from one another.
What do scientist do when an experiment is done? When an experiment is done, scientists analyze the data.
How do scientist present data? Scientists use tables, charts, and graphs to organize, interpret, and present data
What do observations involve? Many observations involve the senses of sight, hearing, touch, and smell
What questions do biologist ask? The questions that biologists ask typically come from observations of the natural world.
How must a hypothesis be phrased? A hypothesis must be phrased in the form of a statement
Why must the hypothesis be testable? Because hypotheses must be testable, the questions that biologists base their hypotheses on must also be testable.
What is an important part of scientific investigation? communication
what are variable? All factors that can change in an experiment are called variables
What is a controlled experiment? An experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time is called a controlled experiment.
What is a manipulated variable? The variable that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis is called the manipulated variable.
What is the factor that may change in response to the manipulated variable? The factor that may change in response to the manipulated variable is called the responding variable. Responding variables are also sometimes called dependent variables.
What are constants? All of the other variables or factors, besides the manipulated and responding variables, are known as controlled variables or constants.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
