5.1. Weathering

Chemical Weathering Any action that results in a change in the chemical composition of a rock.
Physical Weathering The condition where rock is cracked, split, or broken into smaller pieces called sediments with no change in the rock composition.
Soil The part of the regolith that will support plants that have roots.
Weathering The chemical and physical breakdown of rocks at or near Earth's surface by weathering agents.
Contour Plowing Crops are planted in rows parallel to the contours of the land.
Crop Rotation The alternation of crops on the same soil from year to year.
Residual Soil Soil formed from the rock material beneath the soil.
Soil Profile A cross section view of the soil horizions of a given sample.
Strip Cropping Planting strips of low cover crops between strips of other crops.
Subsoil Below the topsoi and contains little organic matter.
Topsoil The top layer of mature soil.
Transported Soil Soil that has been moved from its place of origin.
Weathering Agents The hydrosphere, atmosphere, plants and animals that will change the characteristics of rocks.
