Resp-Circ Systems

Respiratory & Circulatory System

QuestionAnswer
When blood leaves the right atrium where does it go? Right Ventricle
Which side of the heart contains oxygenated blood? Left
Which vessels carry blood away from the heart? To the heart? Arteries. Veins.
Where does gas exchange occur in the lungs? Alveoli
What keeps food from going down the trachea? Epiglottis
What part of the blood is responsible for healing? White blood cells
What part of the blood is responsible for clotting? Platelets
What is the primary goal of cellular respiration? To provide what to our body? To break down sugar in the presence of oxygen to produce ATP (energy)
What is the wall that separates the two sides of the heart? septum
What is another name for windpipe? trachea
What creates pressure to pump blood to the body? heart
Where, specifically, is hemoglobin found and what does it do? In red blood cells- it transports the oxygen
Where are the vocal cords? Larynx
Your heart makes a lub-dub sound, what causes this? Valves closing - This prevents the backflow of blood
When blood leaves the lungs, it is (oxygenated or deoxygenated) blood. How does it re-enter the heart? Oxygenated. Through the pulmonary vein
What is the largest artery in the body? aorta
What is the function of the respiratory system? To take in oxygen and remove carbon dioxide
What are the functions of the circulatory system? 1. Picks up oxygen from the lungs and nutrients from the digestive system and carries them to the body 2. Carries waste products to where they can be eliminated 3. Helps fight disease and injury by carrying the substances that will heal you.
Is it better to breathe through the nose or mouth? Explain. The nose is lined with mucus and cilia which can trap dust particles. It also warms the air before it enters the lungs
What is the equation for cellular respiration? O2 + C6H12O6  CO2 + H2O + ATP Oxygen + Glucose  carbon dioxide + water + ATP
What are the 2 muscles that are involved in breathing? Diaphragm and Intercostals
What are the vessels where gas and nutrient exchange occur? Why is this able to happen so easily in these vessels? Capillaries. They are only 1 cell thick.
What is your pulse? Why does it increase during exercise? It is the bulge of the artery that occurs each time your heart pumps out the blood. It is a reflection of your heart beat. It increases with exercise in order to deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the muscles.
Explain how the circulatory and respiratory systems work together in order for cellular respiration to occur? Respiratory system takes oxygen and delivers to circulatory system. Circulatory system takes oxygen, along with nutrients from digestive system, to cells to be used in cellular respiration. CO2 waste is taken back to the lungs by blood and it is exhaled.
What are the possible blood types a person can have? A, B, AB, 0
What are 4 factors leading to cardiovascular problems? Stress, Inactivity, Poor Diet, Smoking, Heredity
List and describe 3 cardiovascular problems. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) Heart Attack Atherosclerosis
Why do you need to eat and breathe? You need to take in the nutrients and oxygen that your cells need to make ATP (energy) during cellular respiration.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
