QuestionAnswer
Name the sutures on the human skull Coronal, sagittal, lambdoid, and squamous (paired)
What is a fontanel? A fontanel is the soft spot(s) that are present on an infant's skull to allow for growth of the brain
Name the fontanels Anterior (frontal), posterior (occipital), sphenoid (paired) and mastoid (paired)
Name the major cranial bones Frontal, parietal (paired), temporal, occipital, sphenoid, and ethnoid
Name the major facial bones Maxilla (paired), palatine (paired), zygomatic (paired), lacrimal (paired), nasal (paired), inferior nasal conchae (paired), vomer and mandible
Located on the temporal bone, a very round hole medial and anterior to the styloid process carotid canal
Located on the temporal bone, a very small round hole between the styloid and mastoid process stylomastoid canal
Located on the temporal bone, a process lateral and posterior to the styloid process mastoid process
Located on the underside of the temporal bone, a pointy, tooth-looking process styloid process
Located on the interior of the skull on the temporal bone, a hole on the hearing canal internal acoustic meatus
Where the ears attach on the temporal bone external acoustic meatus
Where the mandible articulates with the skull on the temporal bone mandibular condyle
Located on the temporal bone, a jagged hole posterior and lateral to the carotid canal by the foramen magnum jugular foramen
On the temporal bone, this leads from the zygomatic bone towards the temporal bone temporal process
The arch between the zygomatic process and the temporal process zygomatic arch
On the occipital bone, the large hole where the spinal cord attaches to the brain foramen magnum
On the occipital bone, the knobby things on either side of the foramen magnum occipital condyle
The concave larger wing of the sphenoid bone greater wing
The wing superior to the greater wing of the sphenoid bone lesser wing
On the sphenoid bone (superior view), an indent akin to a horse's saddle in the middle of the structure sella turcica
From posterior view of sphenoid bone, two plates on both sides of inferior portion of sphenoid bone medial and lateral pterygoid plates
Located on the sphenoid bone, two very round holes superior to the sella turcica optic foramen (optic canal)
Located on the sphenoid bone, holes posterior and lateral to the optic foramen foramen rotundum (R)
Located on the sphenoid bone, larger holes posterior and lateral to foramen rotundum foramen ovale (O)
Located on the sphenoid bone, very round small holes posterior and lateral to foramen ovale foramen spinosum (S)
Elongated space between sphenoid bone and ear canal foramen lacerum
Opening directly inferior to lesser wing of sphenoid bone superior orbital fissure
Opening posterior to the orbital opening (on floor of orbital socket) of sphenoid bone inferior orbital fissure
The "clit" on the interior part of the skull of the ethmoid bone cribiform plate
The humpy piece in the middle of the "clit" of the ethmoid bone crista galli
Little holes on the surface of the "clit" of the ethmoid bone olfactory foramina
On anterior view, the air channels on the ethmoid bone ethmoid air cells
Plate in the medial portion of the ethmoid bone perpendicular plate
Anterior and lateral to the perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone superior nasal conchae
Inferior to the superior nasal concha of the ethmoid bone middle nasal conchae
Smooth sides (plates) of ethmoid bone orbital plate
Holes found on anterior frontal bone supraorbital foramen
Of the facial bones, this is superior to the teeth and holds the teeth in place Maxiilla (paired)
Of the facial bones, these are the holes that are inferior to the eyes Infraorbital foramen
Of the facial bones, these are the little "mountains" between the teeth sockets alveolar processes
Of the facial bones, this is the hole posterior to the two front teeth (inside of mouth) incisive foramen
Of the facial bones, this is the anterior portion of the roof of the mouth palatine process (makes up anterior 2/3 of the hard palate - the rest is made-up of palatine bones)
Of the facial bones, the holes on the posterior side of the roof of the mouth greater palatine foramen
Of the facial bones, the part leading from the zygomatic bone towards the temporal bone temporal process
Of the facial bones, the arch between the zygomatic process and the temporal process zygomatic arch
Of the facial bones, the two holes lateral on either side of the nasal bone lacrimal foramen
Of the facial bones, this bone is superior to the nasal opening nasal bone (paired)
Of the facial bones, the lowest protrusions in the nasal opening inferior nasal conchae (there are three pairs of nasal conchae; the superior and middle pairs are part of the ethmoid bone. The inferior pair is considered separate bones)
Of the facial bones, this bone is in the middle of the nasal opening perpendicular plate
Of the facial bones, this bone is part of the ethmoid bone and is the inferior portion of the nasal septum the vomer
Of the facial bones, these are the "little mounds" in between the teeth sockets alveolar processes
Of the facial bones, the holes on the side of the chin mental foramen
Of the facial bones, the holes on the interior portion of the mandible mandibular foramen
Of the facial bones, the point of articulation of the mandible with the temporal bone mandibular condyle
Of the facial bones, the process anterior to the mandibular condyle coronoid process
