Metamorphic Rocks Study Guide

Types of Rock Metamorphism Contact Metamorphism. Regional Metamorphism.
Define: Contact Metamorphism Intrusive magma heats surrounding rock, thermally altering rocks outside of the "Molten Zone", but within the Contact Areole.
Define: Contact Areole Area outside of intrusive magma that is thermally altered, but not melted.
Define: Lithostatic Pressure The pressure of the weight of overlying rock on a formation.
Simple Definition for Regional Metamorphism Metamorphism of rock on a large scale.
Define: Directed/Dynamothermal Metamorphism Converging Plates create an environment of increased pressure, putting more stress on rocks, causing foliation.
Define: Foliation Due to pressure, rocks are flattened, leading to a layering effect.
Define: Metamorphic Grade Range of temperate and pressure.
Examples of Foliated Metamorphic Rocks. Also, list a characteristic of each. Slate - Derived from Shale, Dense. Schist - Crystals grow large. Gneiss - Alternating color bands.
Examples of Non-Foliated Metamorphic Rocks. Determine if rock is considered Hard or Soft. Quartzite - Hard. Marble - Soft.
