Scientific Method

QuestionAnswer
Observation The act of noting or watching objects or events using the senses.
Hypothesis An explanation that might be true- a statement that can be tested by additional observations or experimentation.
Prediction The expected outcome of a test, assuming that the hypothesis is correct.
Control Group A group in an experiment that does not receive experimental treatment.
Independent Variable The factor in an experiment that is changed (varied).
Dependent Variable The variable that is measured in an experiment.
Conclusion The part of the experiment where you explain the results.
Discussion The part of the experiment where the data are explained.
Data Composed of the information obtained in the experiment and its presentation in graphs, charts, etc.
Experiment A planned procedure to test a hypothesis.
Constants The parts of the experiment that do not change during the course of the experiment.
Repeated trials number of objects/organisms undergoing treatment for each value of the independent variable, or numbers of times the experiment is repeated
Inference a conclusion, guess or explanation based on observations
Qualitative observation an observation about the quality the thing being observed (color, texture); does not involve a measured or counted number
Quantitative observation an observation involving a quantity (number); counting or measuring
