1st secu Respiration

Instituto Rafael Haller Biology 102 Respiration Lesson 1

Vocabulary WordDefinition
Respiration Entrance of oxygen to the body of a living being and the output of carbon dioxide
Gas exchange Process by which oxygen enters the body, and CO2 exits the body.
Oxygen helps in the extraction of nutrients
Extraction Process to extract the energy contained in nutrients
Cellular respiration the reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
Carbon Dioxide waste from cellular respiration with Water Vapor
Water vapor waste from cellular respiration with Carbon Dioxide
Nutrients Thing that can provide energy
Respiratory system System needed to provide oxygen to the different cells of a pluricellular body.
Oral Cavity the back part of the mouth
Diaphragm muscle that helps with respiration
Thoracic Box Made by the ribs to protect the lungs and the heart
Inhalation is the filling of the lungs with air
Nostrils channels of the nose

Pharynx part of the throat located behind the mouth
Trachea tube that connects the larynx to the lungs
Larynx place of the throat that houses the vocal cords
Bronchi a passage of airway in the respiratory tract that conducts air into the lungs
Bronchiole branches of bronchi that contains the alveoli
Vocal Cords They vibrate, modulating the flow of air being expelled from the lungs, creating the voice
Epiglottis a flap attached to the entrance of the larynx.
Lungs the essential respiration organ in many air-breathing animals
Alveoli an anatomical structure where the gas exchange takes place
Aerobic Respiration requires oxygen in order to generate energy (38 ATP)
Anaerobic Respiration doesn’t require oxygen in order to generate energy ( 2 ATP)
