Cycles - Water, Carb
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Biogeochemical Cycle | The paths of water, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus as they pass from the non-living environment to living organisms and back again. |
| Ground water | Water retained beneath the surface of the Earth. |
| Transpiration | The movement of water from plants into the atmosphere by evaporation from leaves. |
| Evaporation | Movement of water from non-living sources, such as lakes and oceans, into the atmosphere. |
| Percolation | The movement of water (from rain, snow, hail) into the soil |
| Runoff | Precipitation that flows from the land into bodies of water. |
| Water vapor (clouds) | Water held in the atmosphere until it falls to the Earth as precipitation. |
| Combustion | The burning of fossil fuels that then releases carbon into the atmosphere. |
| Cellular Respiration | The process done by living organisms that releases carbon dioxide as a byproduct to be returned to the atmosphere. |
| Photosynthesis | Process done by plants that takes carbon dioxide from atmosphere and returns it to Earth where animals then use it. |
| Nitrogen Fixation | The process done by bacteria to combine nitrogen with hydrogen to form ammonia. |
