Trophic Levels
biology
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Primary Productivity | The rate at which organic material is produced by photosynthetic organisms in an ecosystem. It determines the amount of energy available in an ecosystem. |
| Producer | Organisms that first capture energy from the sun, such as plants, some kinds of bacteria, and algae. |
| Consumer | Those organisms that eat (consume) plants or other organisms to get energy. |
| Trophic Level | All organisms are assigned to a specific level to show how energy moves through an ecosystem. |
| Food Chain | The path of energy through the trophic levels of an ecosystem. |
| Herbivore | Found on the second trophic level, these organisms eat only plants. |
| Carnivore | Found on the third trophic level, these organisms eat herbivores and are classified as secondary consumers. |
| Omnivore | Organisms that eat both plants and animals. They are both herbivores and carnivores. |
| Food Web | A complicated, interconnected group of food chains. |
| Energy Pyramid | A diagram in which each trophic level is represented by a block and the blocks are stacked on top of one another with the lowest trophic level on the bottom. |
| Biomass | The dry weight of tissue and other organic matter found in a specific ecosystem. |
