CHAPTER 20-29
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Bacterial conjugation | In a bacterium, elongated, hollow appendage used to transfer DNA to other cells. |
| Bilaterial symmetry | Body plan having two corresponding or complementary halves. |
| Binary (prokaryotic) fission | Splitting of parent cell into two daughter cells; serves as an asexual form of reproduction in bacteria. |
| Cephalization | Having well-reoganized anterior head with a brain and sensory receptors. |
| Deuterostome | Group of coelomate animals in which the second embryonic opening is associated with the mouth; the first embryonic opening, the blastopore , is associated with the anus. |
| Hermaphroditic | Type of animal that has both male and female sex organs. |
| Host | Organism that provides nourishment and/or shelter for a parasite. |
| Hyphae | Filament of the vegative body of a fungus. |
| Lysogenic pathway | Bacteriophage life cycle in which the virus takes over the incorporates its DNA into that of a bacterium; occurs preliminary to the lytic cycle. |
| Lytic pathway | Bacteriophage life cycle in the virus takes over the operation of the bacterium immediately upon entering it and subsequently destroys the bacterium. |
| Mycelium | Tangled mess of hyphal filamnets composing the vegative body of a fungus. |
| Notochord | Cartlaginous-like supportive dorsal rod in all chordates sometime in their life cycle; replaced by vetebrae in vertebrates. |
| Parasites | Species that is dependent on a host species for survival, ususally to the detriment of the host species. |
| Pathogenic | Disease-causing agent such as viruses, parasitic bacteria, fungi, and animals. |
| Pharynx | In vertebrates, common passageway for both food intake and air movement; located between the mouth and the esophagus. |
| Protostomes | Group of coelomates animals in which the first embryonic opening (the blastopore) is associated with the mouth. |
| Radial symmetry | Body plan in which similar parts are arranged around a central axis, like spores of a wheel. |
| Saprobe | Organism that secretes digestive enzymes and absorbs the resulting nutrients back across the plasma membrane. |
| Symbiotic | Two different species live together in a unique way; it may be beneficial, neutral, or detrimental to one and/or the other species. |
