QuestionAnswer
What is the equation used to find the circumference of earth using eratosthenes method? part angle (measure) / whole angle (360) = part arc (measure) / whole arc
How would you find the percent error that eratosthenes was off by? you would find the difference between the actual circumference and his estimated circumference and / that by the real circumference and multiply by 100.
Is earth an open or closed system? Earth is an open system because meteors and sunlight enter earth and gas can leave so it interacts with the exosphere in this way.
What are the 4 spheres that make up earth? geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere
How do the 4 spheres interact? Using a volcano to compare: earth's internal heat fuels lava to come out of a volcano (geo), lava forms valley and environment for animals (bio), valley affects the way rain runs down (hydro), and therefore water evaporation will occur (atmo)
Do you weigh the same everywhere on Earth? Ex. No! because even if your mass stays the same, gravity is stronger the closer to the center of earth you are. I.e. in valleys or at poles (shortest distance to center at poles)
Why are time zones roughly 15 degrees wide? They are 15 degrees wide because earth rotates 360 degrees in 24 hours and there are 24 timezones for each hour of the day (in relation to sun) so 360/24= 15
Why was eratosthenes able to assume that his angles would be accurate so he could the circumference of earth? The suns rays are parallel
What is the shape of earth? oblate spheroid wider at equator than from pole to pole
Why did earth take on its current shape? after which process? geosphere melted
Which 2 factors are responsible for the shape of Earth? Gravity (spheroid) and Rotation (oblate)
What 2 things affect the strength of gravitational attraction? Distance and Mass
What force drives hurricanes? Sun's energy
Besides Sun's energy, what is the other major source of energy that drives earth events/ processes? Earth's Internal Heat
What does a robinson projection look like? flat at top and bottom, rounded at sides, shows entire earth
Which type of map has the greatest distortion at the polar regions? Mercator Map
What type of map is made by placing a flat piece of paper touching a single point on the globe in the center of the paper? Gnomonic Maps
What type of map has the most distortion on the edges? Gnomonic Maps
What are conic maps used for? road and weather maps b/c there is litte distortion over small areas
How does earths coordinate system of longitude and latitude look on a globe? latitude is like a ladder the whole way up and the longitude is like orangle slices, curved
Where on earth is the distance you travel between longitude lines the greatest? At the equator
When SHOULD globes used instead of flat map projections> comparing and learnign about the shape and size of continents
what is the main cause of seasons? the revolution of earth
If the north star is halfway from horizon to directly overhead what is your latitude? 45 degrees North
BEfore GPS what did ships at sea nee to carry to be able to determine their latitude w/o landmarks in sight? a clock
Why are angular measurements and degrees used in describing a place on earth? Because earth is a sphere
If the time is 9 a.m. in salt lake city (mountain time zone) what time is it in boston? 11 a.m.
If it is 11 p.m on tusday in LA (pacific time zone) what is the time and day in Boston? 2 a.m. on wednesday
What is the name of the ocean to the right of Madagascar? Indian
what is the mountain range on the west coast of south america? Andes
What is the mountain range in east russia called? Urals
What is the island east of Greenland called? iceland
