Science Vocab Project over Chapter 12, Due 1/8

What is weather? The condition of Earth's atmosphere at a given time and place.
What is the atmosphere? The envelope of gases that surrounds Earth.
What is ozone? A form of oxygen with three oxygen atoms per molecule instead of the usual two.
What is water vapor? Water in the form of a gas.
What is photochemical smog? A brownish haze that is a mixture of ozone and other chemicals, formed when pollutants react with each other in the presence of sunlight.
What is acid rain? Rain containing more acid than normal.
What is pressure? The force exerted on a surface divided by the total area over which the surface is exerted.
What is air pressure? The pressure caused by the weight of a column of air pushing down on an area.
What is a barometer? An instrument used to measure changes in air pressure.
What is a mercury barometer? A barometer consisting of a glass tube part-filled with mercury, with one end in a dish of mercury.
What is an aneroid barometer? A barometer that does not use any liquid to measure air pressure.
What is altitude? Elevation above sea level.
What is a jet stream? Bands of high-speed winds approx. 10 kilometers above Earth's surface.
What is the troposphere? The lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere.
What is the stratosphere? The second-lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere.
What is the mesosphere? The layer of the Earth's atmosphere immediately above the stratosphere.
What is the thermosphere? The outermost layer of the Earth's atmosphere.
What is the ionosphere? The lower part of the Earth's atmosphere.
What is the exosphere? The outer layer of the thermosphere.
What is an electromagnetic wave? Waves that can transfer electric/magnetic energy through space.
What is radiation? The direct transfer of energy through space by electromagnetic waves.
What is infrared radiation? Electromagnetic waves with wavelengths longer than visible light, shorter than microwaves.
What is ultraviolet radiation? Electromagnetic waves with wavelengths shorter than visible light, but longer than X-rays.
What is scattering? Reflection of light in all directions.
What is thermal energy? Total energy in motion in the particles of a substance.
What is conduction? Direct transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another substance that it is touching.
What is convection? Direct transfer of thermal energy by the movement of a fluid.
What is wind? Horizontal movement of air from a higher air pressure area to an area with a lower air pressure.
What is an anemometer? Instrument used to measure wind speed.
What is the wind-chill factor? Measure of cooling combining temperature4 and wind-speed.
What is a local wind? Winds that blow over short distances.
What is a sea breeze? Flow of cooler air from ovar an ocean/lake towards land.
What is a land breeze? Flow of air from land to a body of water.
What is a global wind? Winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances.
What is latitude? The distance in degrees North or South of the equator.
