Definitions of cell

definitons os different parts of a cell

QuestionAnswer
Cytoplasm The area between the cell membrane and the nucleus. It is the gel-like substance that all of the organelles float in.
Cell membrane The outside boundary of the cell that separates the cell from the area outside of it. It controls what comes in and out of the cell.
Nucleus The “brain” of the cell. It directs all of the cell's functions.
Nuclear Envelope The membrane that is around the nucleus. Materials can pass in and out through small pores in the envelope.
Chromatin The thin pink strands inside the nucleus contain genetic material, and they tell the cell what to do.
Nucleolus A small structure inside the nucleus that produces ribosomes. The ribosomes then produce proteins for the cell.
Mitochondria Blue, rod shaped bacteria in the cell that convert energy from food into energy that the cell can use.
Endoplasmic Reticulum A large group of pathways around the nucleus that carry proteins and other things to different parts of the cell.
Ribosomes Ribosomes create proteins that are released to different areas of the cell.
Golgi Bodies Receives proteins and other materials formed in the endoplasmic reticulum and sends them to the other parts of the cell. They also can send materials outside of the cell.
Vacuole The storage place of a cell. It stores food and other things made by the cell, but can also store the cell's waste.
Lysosomes Small, round organelles that carry chemicals that can break down some materials in the cell. Some break down food particles and others break down old cell parts so they can be reused.
Chloroplast Transforms energy from the sun into energy used to feed the cell.
Cell Wall A layer of nonliving material that surrounds a plant cell.
