Weather Quiz

QuestionAnswer
What is weather? the condition of the atmosphere at a particular time and place.
What is climate? average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time.
What is the Water Cycle? the continuous movement of water from water sources into the air, onto and over land, unto the ground, and back to the water sources.
What is humidity? the amount of water vapor or moisture in the air.
What is relative humidity? the amount of moisture the air contains compared with the maximum amount it can hold at a particular temperature.
What is water vapor? water in its gaseous state?
What is evaporation? the state of change from a liquid to a vapor
What is condensation? the change of state from a gas to a liquid
What is transpiration? the process by which plants release water vapor into the air through their leaves
What is the dew point? the temperature at which air is saturated and condensation forms
What is a cloud? A collection of millions of tiny water droplets or ice crystals.
What is runoff? water, usually from precipitation, that flows across land and collects in rivers, streams, and eventually the ocean
What is precipitation? water, in solid or liquid form that falls from the air to the earth.
What is a barometer? a device used to measure air pressure
What is a thermometer? a device used to measure temperature
What is an isobar? a line connecting points of equal atmospheric pressure
What is a pressure gradient? movement of air from high pressure to low pressure, one cause of wind
What us a front? a boundary between two air masses
What is wind? a flow of air on a larger scale
What are air masses? large bodies of air that have similar temperature and moisture
What is atmospheric pressure? the weight of air pressing down on the earth's surface?
What are cumulus clouds? puffy white clouds that tend to have flat bottoms
What are stratus clouds? clouds that form in layers
What are cirrus clouds? thin, feathery white clouds that are found at high altitudes
