MHS Biomech Module I

Vocab. review of terms in Ch. 1 & 2 of textbk and in lecture notes

QuestionAnswer
What is kinesiology? Term referring to the whole area of the study of human movement.
What is biomechanics? The study of motion and analysis of the action of forces on living things.
Define electromyography. A test that measures and records the activity of contracting skeletal muscles in response to electrical stimulation.
What is a force measurement device? A measuring instrument that detects the ground reaction force generated by a body standing on it.
What are a few of the goals of biomechanics? Performance improvement, injury prevention or rehabilitation, product design improvment and application in forensic investigation.
What is anthropometrics? The study of the physical properties of the human body such as height and weight predisposing an athlete to success in one sport and disadvantages in another.
Define sports medicine. An umbrella term covering both the clinical and scientific aspects of exercise and sport.
What is kinematics? The description of the appearance of an executed sports skill (technique or form) with regards to sequencing and timing of movement.
What is kinetics? The study of forces associated with motion.
Define statics. The study of systems that are in state of constant motion, either at rest or moving at constant velocity.
Define dynamics. The study of systems which are subject to acceleration.
What is mechanics? A branch of physics involved in analyzing the action of forces to study anatomical and functional aspects of living organisms.
