Intestinal Obstruction: It can be mechanical or non-mechanical. Partial or complete obstruction that prevents the GI from passing.
Fluid and Electrolyte & Acid/base imbalances High at the small intestine results in metabolic alkalosis. Small bowel movement indicates dehydration.
Manifestations: Ab pain, distention, tender ab, high pitched sounds above, N & V.
Diagnostic studies: Ab x-ray, barium enema, BUN, CBC & electrolytes.
Treatment: Nasogastric decompression of the GI to remove gas/fluids. Correct and maintain fluid & electrolytes. IV N/S & potassium.
